Do you need a Facebook account to use the Oculus/Meta Quest 2?

No, not anymore. On August 23, 2022, Meta removed the requirement of a Facebook account to access Quest 2 and other Quest products.

However, what it does require is a Meta Account, separate from Facebook. This account is to manage purchases and the digital library of VR games you are accruing.

But what will happen to my old Facebook/Oculus account?

As of January 1, 2023, all existing Oculus/Facebook account must be changed or merged with a Meta Account to access Quest 2 and other Quest products. If by January 1, 2023, you have not changed or merged your account, you cannot access your headset.

Even with the new Meta Account, does my data still get tracked?

Yes – your data is still tracked and stored by Meta to build a profile about you. However, this can be changed. We have written a guide on how to change this and increase privacy on Quest products.

For further context, Quest products were banned in Germany from September 2020 as they violated the “coupling prohibition” in the EU GDPR privacy laws. This has now changed, since legally, a Meta Account is within the ecosystem of Quest products, so Quest products are on sale again in Germany.
