Khora supports European VR research with hardware from VR Expert

Khora creates immersive experiences for organizations across healthcare, culture and other industries. Its longstanding collaboration with VR Expert supports the hardware needs behind that work. A recent order for 91 PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise headsets is intended for TRANSCEND-XR, a European research project developing immersive support for young people who have survived testicular cancer.

  • About Khora

Founded in 2015 and based in Copenhagen, Denmark, Khora is an immersive production studio working with businesses, public institutions and research partners. Its team develops VR and AR content for applications, interactive screens, projection mapping, AI solutions, etc. Ranging from museum installations and commercial demonstrations to healthcare research. The company combines creative production with technical development to build experiences around the needs of each project.

Khora’s cultural work includes virtual journeys through historical settings and interactive experiences for museums. Alongside these public-facing projects, the studio works with healthcare professionals and researchers to explore how immersive technology can support patients and clinical practice.

    Developing VR for healthcare

Khora’s healthcare portfolio includes experiences for medical procedures, mental health applications and patient education. For example, Comfort XR offers games designed to distract children during needle procedures. The games were developed with specialists from the Knowledge Center for Children’s Pain at Rigshospitalet.

Its research projects also cover VR experiences intended to help children during diagnostic imaging and investigations into avatar therapy for people experiencing distressing voices. This work brings Khora into collaborations where software development must fit the needs of patients, healthcare teams and research protocols.

A hardware partnership spanning several years

Khora has purchased PICO and Meta headsets from VR Expert over several years. According to Khora, the collaboration covers thousands of devices across its projects. This purchasing relationship supports a studio whose hardware requirements extend across commercial experiences and larger research initiatives.

For TRANSCEND-XR, Khora placed an order with VR Expert for 91 PICO 4 Ultra Enterprise headsets. The order gives a concrete example of the scale involved when an immersive application is prepared for use beyond a single demonstration or development team.

    Preparing headsets for TRANSCEND XR

TRANSCEND-XR is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program and coordinated by University College Cork. It brings together 15 partners across 12 countries to co-create and evaluate an extended reality intervention for adolescent and young adult testicular cancer survivors. Extended reality, or XR, includes technologies such as VR and AR.

The project aims to help survivors understand the late effects of treatment and address unmet support needs. Survivors, care partners and healthcare professionals contribute to the development process, helping shape the tool around life after cancer. Khora contributes the immersive production and development expertise needed to build the experience.

For this project, Khora plans to distribute the 91 headsets to cancer clinics across seven countries for testing and patient use at home. This seven-country hardware distribution sits within the wider international consortium. The planned home use connects the project’s educational aims with support that survivors can access outside a clinic.

Supporting the next stage of research

VR Expert’s role in this collaboration is the provision of headsets, while Khora and the research consortium develop and evaluate the experience. The project will examine how the intervention works in practice, including its effectiveness and delivery. The headset order supports preparation for that work as the partners move toward testing in clinical and home settings.

For Khora, TRANSCEND-XR is a further application of its immersive development expertise within healthcare. For VR Expert, it is another step in a hardware relationship that has continued across multiple years and projects.
