Facebook has temporarily halted sales of all Oculus VR headsets in Germany. This is because new users of an Oculus headset will need a Facebook account from October to log in, which is in violation of German privacy laws. It is not yet known how long sales will be stopped.
Users who already own an Oculus account can still use it after October, but they must merge it with a Facebook account. From January 1, 2023, their Oculus account will expire permanently. Oculus was acquired by Facebook in March 2014.
So buyers of Oculus hardware in Germany will be hit, just as many companies were hit earlier this year by the news that Oculus would stop selling the Oculus Go. This VR headset was loved by companies because of its low entry-level price. At the time, when announcing the news, Oculus indicated that it wanted to target the Oculus Quest and the Oculus Rift S: two VR headsets that are mainly used by consumers.
As a replacement for the Oculus Go, which has not been for sale since June of this year, the Pico G2 4K seems the most suitable alternative. An advantage of this VR headset is that the headset does not have to be calibrated every time you put them on, unlike the Oculus Go.
The Pico Neo 3 is a good alternative for the Oculus Quest. This VR headset is lighter on the head than the heavy-duty design of the Oculus Quest.
For the Oculus Rift S, the soon to be released HP Reverb G2 seems the best alternative. Especially for those looking for a better viewing experience thanks to the higher screen resolution of the HP Reverb G2 compared to the Oculus Rift S.
