The client

KUKA AG is a globally active automation company headquartered in Augsburg, Germany. KUKA was founded back in 1898 and now, more than one hundred years later, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of intelligent automation solutions with around 14,000 employees.

KUKA is unique because the Group offers its customers everything from a single source: From robots to cells to fully automated systems. In addition, the company networks them in markets such as Automotive, Electronics, Metal & Plastic, Consumer Goods, E-Commerce/Retail and Healthcare.

The challenge

To ensure the Group’s high quality standards, KUKA is always on the lookout for innovative ways to optimize the job training of new talents and existing employees.

This is where the idea came up to use the innovative virtual reality technology for these purposes. The goal is to improve and further digitalize training processes and methods. VR Expert came to the company’s attention through recommendations and the company sought advice on the use of virtual reality.

The solution

After consulting with VR Expert, KUKA decided to implement virtual reality. When it came to selecting the right VR hardware, the decision was made in favor of the Pico Neo 3 Pro Eye. This VR headset is very well suited for VR training and education, as it is a stand-alone, wireless device that is ideally designed for interactive training scenarios thanks to its 6DoF tracking.

The Pro Eye version differs from the normal Pro version in that it is able to collect data on the focus and gaze direction of users through its integrated eye tracking. This makes it possible, for example, to gain important insights into the effectiveness of a training session.

KUKA uses the virtual reality headsets in various areas. In order to be able to give potential trainees an insight into the training professions at KUKA, they developed a 360° tour of the Group’s new training center. This tour will be made available to interested parties at information fairs as well as online.

Furthermore, the VR headsets are also used for the topic of occupational safety. Here, for example, employees can put themselves in the position of a forklift driver. This driver sees other road users significantly worse than others due to the vehicle’s design, loads and obstacles. The virtual experience makes employees more aware of potential hazards, which will help prevent accidents in the future.

Other use cases in which KUKA employs virtual reality include training personnel through virtual welding, company and product insights in customer showrooms, and on-site product training at customer locations.

“By using VR, we manage to make certain topics even more interesting and convey them to our trainees. The Pico devices are very user-friendly, easy to operate and can be used without a Facebook account, which makes them particularly well-suited for use at our company.”, says Stefan Wilhelm, IT instructor at KUKA.
