The customer

Founded 152 years ago, the RWTH Aachen University is one of the most renowned universities in the STEM subjects and has been a university of excellence since 2007. Currently, more than 47,000 students study at RWTH Aachen: 13,354 of them are international students from 138 countries, who are taught by more than 550 professors.

The “MediaLab Lehramt” at RWTH Aachen University is known for its innovative research in the field of teacher training using the latest technologies such as virtual reality. The MediaLab Lehramt develops sustainable concepts to integrate the reflective use of digital media into teacher training and explores, among other things, the possibilities of how VR can improve teaching and the teaching environment, but also teacher training.

Another VR project is hosted by the RWTH’s LTI Lab.  “Rendering Pipeline eXperience in VR” aims to familiarise students with computer graphics in VR and to use learning analytics to observe, analyse and support learning processes.

The challenge

RWTH Aachen University wanted to explore how VR simulations can enrich teaching and classroom activities. This required a virtual reality headset that could provide reliable eye tracking to obtain research results on non-verbal communication and visual attention capture. In addition, the VR devices should have a user-friendly setup.

RWTH Aachen discovered the outstanding possibilities of VR simulations in combination with high-resolution eye-tracking. The next step was to find the ideal provider and the right VR headset.

The solution

RWTH Aachen turned to VR Expert and after analysing the requirements, the Pico Neo 3 Pro Eye was chosen as the ideal VR headset because it has a high-resolution 4K display that can show the simulated environment as realistically as possible. In combination with the integrated eye tracking, the hygiene-friendly PU leather cover, the high wearing comfort and the simple operation, the Pico Neo 3 Pro Eye was the perfect choice.

RWTH Aachen University perfects and optimises its research and teaching by offering student teachers a protected space with the help of virtual reality. To do this, it provides classroom simulations that are repeatable and free of privacy and ethical concerns, while being highly controllable and endlessly customisable. The objectives of using VR include exploration and motivational enhancement, as well as education about school use scenarios and problems/limitations.
