With 130 hydropower plants in Austria and Bavaria, VERBUND plays a key role in sustainable energy supply. Since 2017, the company has been working increasingly on testing, developing and introducing digital innovations, also to support employees with modern technologies.

The challenge
The specific requirements for the VR headsets included easy handling without personalized logins and the ability to operate offline, in order to provide digital replicas of the power plants for planning purposes.
Usage
Using Pico and Meta VR headsets, VERBUND was able to create virtual representations of its power plants and prepare employees for critical situations, such as avalanche hazards in high alpine regions.

The challenge
Specifically, two VR projects were to be realized. The first objective was to create digital images of individual power plants and make them available to employees. These images were to be used to answer specific questions from employees and simplify planning.
The requirements for the VR glasses were very specific:
The solution had to be available offline, as it is a critical infrastructure. No login with personalized emails and passwords was required to make the solution as easy to use as possible. For future projects, such as the creation of interactive power plant tours, it was necessary for the glasses to have 6DoF (Six Degrees of Freedom).
An additional project aimed to sensitize employees to the dangers of avalanches, especially as some hydroelectric power plants are located in high alpine regions such as the Zillertal in Tyrol or Kaprun in Salzburg.
The solution
After careful consideration, VERBUND opted for the Pico Neo 3 VR goggles, which offer the required 6DoF functionality and require neither personalized emails nor passwords. Thanks to VR Expert’s installation service, the glasses were already supplied with the necessary software. This enabled VERBUND to record the 360° power plant tours on the glasses. The material could be transferred easily and completely offline from the laptop to the glasses via a cable connection. This made it easy to manage the 360-degree tours of the hydropower plants. After the release of the new Pico headset, the Pico 4 Enterprise, VERBUND also opted for this headset as it met all the criteria and also offered a higher resolution.
For the avalanche training project, VERBUND opted for the Meta Quest 3, as the special software is only compatible with Meta headsets.
