The Varjo XR-1 is a mixed reality headset that takes the best features of the Varjo VR-2, with added augmented and extended reality capabilities. The XR-1 has been developed for building photorealistic mixed reality experiences with a full field of view in human-eye resolution. The Varjo XR-1 has the following advantages:
First, the Varjo XR-1 is the only MR headset capable of recreating human-eye resolution. The XR-1 provides the user with near human-eye vision. Thanks to 4 built-in displays working simultaneously, allowing users to see even the tiniest of details.
Another advantage of the XR-1 is its two built-in external cameras and integrated infrared sensor system. This is the main difference between the Varjo VR-2 and XR-1. This difference makes the XR-1 the only headset able to recreate true to life imagery in mixed reality. The headset uses video pass-through technology instead of optical see-through systems found in the HoloLens. This allows colors to be perfectly rendered by the headset. The built-in cameras on the outside of the headset give the user a larger field of view compared to optical see-through devices. The XR-1 headset will collect real-time data about the environment, allowing shadows and reflections to be added to virtual objects in real time.
Finally, the XR-1 has the ability to track and analyze eye movement across both real and virtual environments with the highest of accuracy. This can be of great value during research and development of products and high pressure trainings and simulations examination, to better understand issues and opportunities.

Yes, the Varjo XR-1 uses pass through technology compared to the more commonly used optical see-through systems found in the HoloLens 2 and MagicLeap. The big issue with optical see-through devices is that the holographic images can come over as ghostlike and hazy, while pass through technology is able to recreate photorealistic virtual objects. The XR-1 does not currently support GPU’s made by AMD
To use the Varjo XR-1 it is recommended to use four Steam VR Base Stations for apps that require moving in a room, while two is sufficient for apps that can be done while stationary or while sitting.
Varjo provides an API for third-party tracking technology providers to integrate their solution with Varjo headsets. Currently Varjo supports SteamVR tracking and ART tracking.
