The client

XGI is a technical development and design office specialising in machine and equipment construction. The company offers industrial engineering services and brings 28 years of experience in industrial project development.

The projects handled by XGI usually start from a problem definition and then often go through the same successive steps: concept design, mechanical strength calculation, detailed design (technical drawings) and finally detailed design for construction (engineering drawings).

The challenge

Static photorealistic renderings, images for step-by-step plans or procedures to follow, and 3D animated films are already a standard part of many projects.

XGI has always followed the development of visualisation possibilities closely and passionately, and has set itself the goal of using virtual reality technology for these purposes. Because XGI often has large clients where many people at different locations are involved in a project. The interactive possibilities and the data’s ability to be used immediately in a virtual reality environment therefore make this technology particularly well-suited for XGI. The company therefore contacted VR Expert for advice in this regard.

The solution

For virtual reality solutions, XGI decided to use WebGL/WebXR applications. The use of these applications also makes it possible to use the interactive 3D models without having to install new software, which is subject to strict regulations in many companies. An up-to-date web browser for PC and headset is sufficient.

When it came to choosing the right headsets for which to develop the applications, two different headsets were chosen: the HTC Vive Focus 3 and the HP Reverb G2.

The HTC Vive Focus 3 is a standalone VR headset with a 5K display that is specifically designed for professional use cases such as interactive training and simulations.

The HP Reverb G2, on the other hand, is a PC VR headset that is compatible with Windows Mixed Reality and has excellent cross-platform compatibility.
